Boogie Woogie - New Era

Centrum boogie stało się Chicago i o ile na „rent parties" i w „cutting contests" w Harlemie grano ragtime, to w „Dzielnicy Południowej" Chicago przy podobnych okazjach rozbrzmiewał fortepianowy blues lub boogie-woogie. W istocie również początki boogie związane są z amerykańskim Środkowym Zachodem i Południem w dół, aż po Teksas, skąd pochodzi Sam Price, jeden z niewielu godnych uwagi pianistów, jeszcze dziś grających autentyczne, nieskomercjalizowane fortepianowe bluesy i boogie-woogie. Także Memphls, St. Louis i Kansas City były ważnymi ośrodkami boogie. Charakterystyczne dla boogie ostinato — silnie akcentowane, stale powtarzane figury basowe — zrodziło się przypuszczalnie na południu Stanów z figur akompaniamentu towarzyszącego grze śpiewaków, którzy przy wtórze banjo i gitar wykonywali ludowe bluesy.

W dialekcie plemion Afryki Zachodniej boogie woogie jest to synonimem słowa „tańczyć".
Styl pianistyczny wywodzący się ze stylu barrelhouse, powstały z elementów ragtime'u i pierwotnego bluesa na początku XX wieku w południowym Teksasie i Luizjanie. Rozwinięty został w Chicago i Kansas City. Oparty jest na 12-taktowym bluesowym schemacie harmonicznym. Charakteryzuje się akompaniamentem lewej ręki realizującym linię ośmiu nut bez synkopy w takcie - tzw. „walking bass" (po angielsku dosłownie „spacerujący bas") i jednoczesną grą prawą ręką improwizowanych, zmieniających się figur melodycznych, załamanych akordów, biegników, klasterów oraz specyficznego tremolo, przez co odznacza się rytmiczną i harmoniczną zależnością w grze obu rąk. Pierwszym utworem nagranym w tym stylu był "The Rocks" wykonany w 1923 r. przez Claya Custersa. Nazwa „boogie woogie" pochodzi od tytułu utworu „Pinetop's Boogie Woogie" nagranego przez Pine Top Smitha w 1928 r. Do najwybitniejszych wykonawców boogie-woogie oprócz Clarence Pine-Top Smitha należą Jimmy Yancey, Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson, Cripple Clarence Lofton, Cow Cow Davenport, Little Brother Montgomery, Roosevelt Sykes, Sunnyland Slim.

Wokalista i pianista urodzony 28.03.1887 w Kingsport (Tennessee). W 1917 r. przyjechał do Chicago i tam zaczął występować w klubach, knajpach i lokalach tanecznych. W 1927 r. nagrywał z Sammy Brownem dla wytwórni Gennett. W 1935 r. nagrywał z Bumble Bee Slimem dla wytwórni Vocalion i ARC. W latach 1937-1943 nagrywał m.in. z Redem Nelsonem, Sammy Brownem i pianistką Louisą Johnson oraz solo dla wytwórni Yazoo, Solo, Riverside, Pax i Session. Popularność zdobyły jego nagrania Streamline Train" i„Crying Mother Blues" W latach 40-tych występował sporadycznie. W 1951 r. wycofał się z życia muzycznego. Zm. 9.01.1957 w Chicago (Illinois). Był znanym w latach 30-tych wykonawcą bluesa i boogie woogie.

Przez 12 lat nagrywał dla tej wytwórni 125 utworów. Na początku lat 50-tych występował w klubach Missouri oraz z Harlem Variety Revue. Wystąpił w filmach „Harlem Jazz Festival" (1955), „Rhythm and Blues Revue" (1955) i „Basin Street Revue" (1956). W drugiej połowie lat 50-tych i na początku lat 60-tych działał w klubach Waszyngtonu, Chicago i Nowego Jorku. W połowie lat 50-tych występował z Johnny Otis Group w klubie Barrelhouse w Los Angeles. W 1958 r. nagrywał dla wytwórni Aladdin z Johnny Mandel Band oraz grał z zespołem Charlesa Browna, a w następnym roku nagrywał z nim dla wytwórni Ace. W 1961 r. nagrywał dla wytwórni King. W 1966 r. występował z własnym trio w Dallas. Przez kilka następnych lat nie grał zawodowo. Na początku lat 70-tych występował w Cincinnati m.in. z Charlesem Brownem. W 1973 r. nagrywał dla wytwórni Blues Spectrum.
Zm. 3.01.1980 w Houston (Teksas). Należał do najbardziej znanych wykonawców jump bluesa i rhythm and bluesa.
